Thomas G. "Tom" Gates

Thomas G. "Tom" Gates, 92, of Manheim, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Born in Quentin, Pennsylvania, Tom was the son of the late William R. Sr. and Mabel D. (Hendricks) Gates. He shared a beautiful life with his wife, Jean L. (Maybe) Gates. Together they celebrated 69 years of marriage on July 20th, 2026. Tom attended Stiegel Elementary School and Manheim Central High School, where he played on the first football team in the school’s history, helping pave the way for future generations of Manheim Central Barons.

A proud patriot, Tom honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He spent four years aboard the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865) and sailed across the world. Tom devoted much of his career to Lift-All Company, Inc. in Manheim, where he worked for more than 20 years as a plant manager and purchasing agent. Earlier in his career, he was employed by Howmet Corporation in Lancaster.

Tom was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Manheim, served on the Manheim Borough Council for 14 years, and was an active member of both the Manheim Lions Club, the Manheim Jaycees and the Skulldugger’s Committee. As a 32nd Degree Mason, he belonged to Manheim Lodge No. 587, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, and Reading Consistory. When he wasn't working or serving his community, Tom was happiest outdoors. An avid hunter, fisherman, and boater, he treasured the more than 25 years his family spent at their home on Indian River Bay in Delaware. Those trips created countless memories of early mornings on the water, family gatherings, and time shared with friends doing what he loved most.

Above all else, Tom was devoted to his family. He was always sharing one of his unforgettable stories, offering advice, or simply making someone laugh. Tom never met a stranger and was always ready to help. Those who knew Tom will remember his warm smile, his quick wit, and the unwavering love he had for his family and friends. Tom was always willing to give a hug to those who needed it. His legacy of service, commitment to his faith, and generosity will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: T. Gregory husband of Colleen Gates of Albuquerque, NM, David A. Gates of Charleston, SC, two daughters: Deborah A. Good-Allen wife of John A. Allen of Manheim, Mindy Fee of Manheim and companion Boyd Henderson, eleven grandchildren: Jake, Jennifer, Rachael, Emily, Benjamin, Hannah, Danielle, Ryan, Abby, and ten great grandchildren. Preceding him in death is a son-in-law, Thomas Fee, a daughter-in-law, Susan Gates, a brother, William R. Gates, Jr, and three Sisters: Bennetta M. Shelly, Mary E. Zinn, and Jane A. Bruckhart.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Tom’s Celebration of Life Service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Please omit flowers.
