Theodore W. "Ted" Schmid

May 5, 1934 — Oct 20, 2026

Theodore W. “Ted” Schmid, 92, of Lititz passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at UPMC Lititz Hospital surrounded by the love of a family who meant the world to him.

Born in Philadelphia, Ted was the son of the late Theodore F. and Adessa Ewing Schmid Brown. Ted was a proud 1953 graduate of Lititz High School where he lettered four years on the varsity football team and played basketball. Ted built a life defined by hard work, a love of learning, a passion for the things he enjoyed, and, above all, devotion to his family.

Ted was the beloved husband of the late Roberta J. “Bobbie” Lutz Schmid. Their 64 years of marriage, until Bobbie’s passing in August 2017, were a lasting testament to a lifetime of love and companionship. Together they built a family and a lifetime of memories that Ted treasured deeply.

A skilled master carpenter, Ted took pride in his work, spending many years with the Philadelphia Carpenters Union and Armstrong World Industries in Lancaster. His craftsmanship reflected the dedication and care he brought to all that he did.

Beyond his work, Ted had a spirit of adventure and a lifelong enthusiasm for the things that brought him joy. He was well known in the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) Midget Car Series, where he competed at major racetracks throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Racing was a special part of his life, reflecting his love of speed, competition and the excitement of the track.

Some of Ted’s happiest times were spent at Barnegat Light Long Beach Island, New Jersey, where he enjoyed saltwater surf fishing. For Ted there was something truly special about being by the ocean with a fishing rod in hand. He also enjoyed remote-control airplanes and toy trains. He was always curious about how things worked and eager to learn something new. An avid reader Ted believed in lifelong learning and maintained a keen interest in the world around him.

A devoted Philadelphia sports fan, Ted enjoyed cheering on his beloved Eagles, Phillies and 76ers. Whether following his favorite teams, pursuing his many interests or simply spending time with those he loved, Ted found joy in the experiences that made life meaningful.

Above all, Ted loved his family. He cherished the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The memories they created together will remain a lasting part of his legacy. He will be remembered not only for the life he lived and the many interests he pursued, but also for the love he gave so generously to those closest to him.

Ted is survived by his daughter, Adessa Bender; his two sons, Theodore W. Schmid II, husband of Wendy Schmid, and Brett Schmid, all of Lititz; four grandchildren, Erin, wife of Justin Heinly; Scott, husband of Jeanie Bender; Ian, husband of Robyn Schmid; and Taylor Schmid, fiancée of Savannah Watkins; and four great-grandchildren, Briella, Connor, Caroline, and Colin. Ted had a soft heart for all animals, especially his beloved dog Tucker, who brought him much comfort and companionship.

Preceding him in death in addition to his wife and parents is a son-in-law, Dan Bender.

Services for Ted will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Lititz Moravian Cemetery.
