Dr. Tom R. McElhaney, DVM, 78, of Manheim, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veterinarian, and friend, Tom lived a life marked by compassion, service, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Born in East Liverpool, Ohio, Tom was the son of the late Chester R. and Mary Allison McElhaney. He shared a loving and enduring marriage with his wife, Linda L. Ristau McElhaney. This month, they would have celebrated 53 years together—a partnership built on faith, devotion, and countless cherished memories.
Tom earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University and dedicated more than five decades to caring for animals and the families who loved them. Beginning his career in Beaver Falls and later establishing himself in Manheim as the owner and operator of Manheim Animal Hospital, Tom was more than a veterinarian—he was a trusted friend and source of comfort to generations of pet owners. His genuine concern for every animal and family he served left a lasting impression on the community.
Faith was a cornerstone of Tom’s life. He was a member of Lake Mount Church of Christ in New Waterford, Ohio, for 30 years and later worshiped at Ekklesia of Christ in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He brought the Old Testament scriptures to life for many youth and loved teaching the book of Esther. His love for the Lord guided the way he lived, worked, and cared for others.
A loyal sports fan, Tom could often be found cheering on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes football and the Manheim Central Barons. Yet, no game or hobby brought him more joy than spending time with his family. He was his grandchildren’s biggest supporter, rarely missing an opportunity to attend their sporting events and celebrate their accomplishments. Whether offering encouragement from the sidelines, sharing wisdom, or simply spending time together, Tom's greatest happiness came from being present for the people he loved.
Tom will be remembered for love for Jesus, steady presence, and sense of humor. His legacy lives on in the family he treasured, the community he served, and the countless lives—both human and animal, especially the cats he adored—that were touched by his compassion.
Surviving in addition to his wife Linda, are four daughters: Brenda wife of Joe Brunner of Dillsburg, Laurie wife of Rod Jerry of Pinehurst, NC, Rachel wife of Mike Brunner of Lebanon, Lesley wife of Addison Lehman of Mount Joy, a son, Nathaniel McElhaney of Atlanta, GA, 12 grandchildren, and two sisters: Vicki wife of John Cosma of Hendersonville, TN, and Marsha Green of Danville, VA. Preceding him in death are two brothers: Larry and Randy McElhaney, and a sister, Tammy Rankin.
Services for Tom will be announced at a later date.
