Darlene L. Frey

March 22, 1932 — January 6, 2024

 

Darlene L. Frey, 91 years old, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024. She was the wife of the late H. Richard Frey who died in 2006.   Born in Manheim on March 22, 1932 she was the daughter of the late Elmer A. and Mabel Hoffer Longenecker.   Darlene graduated from MCHS in 1950 and LGH School of Nursing in 1953.   She worked as an RN for 18 years concluding her nursing career as Director of Nursing for the United Zion Home in Lititz.  She subsequently worked at Heisey’s Jewelry Store and the Manheim Auto Auction.   She was a lifelong member of Salem UMC where she taught Sunday School, assisted with Bible School and volunteered at church camp.   In addition, she was a member of the United Methodist Women, participated on the administrative board, the council of ministries, the mission committee and the usher team.  She was also a member and past president of the Manheim Lioness Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award which honors an individual’s dedication to humanitarian service.  She was an avid roller skater, a voracious reader and a world traveler.  During her lifetime she visited 40 states, 20 countries and 4 continents.  She had been a resident of the Pleasant View Retirement Community since 2003.   During her residency she served on the Resident Council, fulfilled the role of inhouse librarian, assisted with social events and worked in the mailroom and gift shop.

She is survived by her children:  Linda (wife of W. Thomas Johnson), Stephen (Laura) and Pamela (wife of Steven Brandt), 8 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren and 5 step-greatgrandchildren.   She was predeceased by her parents, a sister (Jacqueline) and 3 half-siblings (Grace Jones, John F Hummer and Annabelle Dissinger).

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
