Alvin K. Herr, 85, of Manheim, passed away on June 10, 2026, at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, PA on June 21, 1940, to the late Parke and Esther (Buchen) Herr. He was married to Doris (Gish) Herr for 64 years.
He graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1958 where he was on the rifle team. After graduation he worked as a construction foreman for various companies. He began growing broiler chickens in 1968, and by 1976 he was working on the farm full-time. After retiring from farmwork in 2000, he became an independent contractor for Phoenix Courier until 2017.
His day began with reading the Bible and doing the puzzles in the newspaper and often followed up with a game of pool, or swimming in the pool at Pleasant View Communities where he resided. His favorite days included a card game of Rook, Pinochle, or Haus; a hobby he happily passed on to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed golf, tennis, and hunting as well as traveling the world with Doris either for vacation or mission trips. In addition, he served faithfully at Manheim Brethren In Christ Church over his 60+ years of membership as deacon, trustee, and various other capacities offering practical and spiritual assistance.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his children: Gregory, and his wife Beth, of Manheim; Jeffrey, and his wife Deborah, of Center Valley; Sheri Yoder, and her husband Randall, of Christiana; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one on the way. Also surviving him are three younger sisters: Dora Brubaker, and her husband Paul, of Manheim; Rosene Martin of Spring Grove; and Linda Auker, and her husband Thomas, of Bassett, VA.
