Victor B. Landis

March 28, 1919 — January 7, 2016

Victor Bentz Landis of Brethren Village and formerly of Neffsville died on the morning of January 7, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on the family farm at Landis Valley to Elizabeth Bentz of Brunnerville and Walter B. Landis of Landis Valley. He attended a one-room school in Roseville and later graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1937. Like the generations before him, Victor was involved in all aspects of his family's farms.
Victor was also an accomplished trumpet player and travelled to Los Angeles in 1940 with some musician friends from Lititz to pursue a career in music. This plan was interrupted, however, when he returned home to enlist. He was a member of the 103rd Medical Regiment Band of the 28th Division during his five years in the Army, during World War II. After returning to Lancaster he continued to play trumpet locally with the Andy Kerner Band.
While in the service, Victor married the former Doris Roberson of Augusta, Ga. They returned to Lancaster and lived in Neffsville. After their divorce, Victor continued to live at what is now Landis Woods until 1992. During his years in Neffsville, Victor enjoyed his dog, his horses and his farm, and friends and strangers alike would often drop by to sit and talk when the corral lights were on and people were riding.

He retired from Wagaman Brothers Printing Company where he worked for more than 35 years.
Victor is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Hauser and her husband Allen; nephew Robert E. Landis (Irean); great nephew Robert S. Landis (Liz); and great niece Nancy J. Brown. He was preceded in death by his brother, Earl B. Landis.

Family and friends are invited to the Brethren Village Chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Wednesday, January 13th for a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m., with the Reverend J. Mark Tedford officiating. Interment will be in Landis Valley Mennonite Cemetery, Neffsville.
