Roland E. Kuniholm

August 17, 1929 — October 5, 2018

Mr. Roland E. “Rolly” Kuniholm of Lititz, PA passed away at Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by his family on October 5, 2018. He was 89 years old.

Roland is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Althea H. Kuniholm of Lititz, PA, as well as his four children, Whitney T. Kuniholm (Carol) of Exton, PA, Jason H. Kuniholm (Joanne) of Lancaster, PA, Andrew E. Kuniholm (Laura) of Fairfax, VA and Myra J. Bruce (David) of Wakefield, MA. In addition, Roland had twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Roland was born to C. Harry and Marta Kuniholm of Gardner, MA on August 17, 1929. He was the third of four brothers who included Carl Kuniholm of Woodstock, VT, Harry Kuniholm of Athol, MA (deceased) and Thor Kuniholm of Philadelphia, PA.

Roland graduated from Gardner High School in 1947, Columbia University in 1951 and Harvard Business School in 1953. He then served in the US Navy as a Lieutenant JG and was honorably discharged in 1962.

Roland began his career working for McKinsey & Company. He then became Circulation Director of the fledgling Christianity Today magazine, a move which established his career path as a direct marketing professional. Over the years Roland worked for various organizations in the Washington, DC area, eventually starting his own agency, Kuniholm Associates. In addition he authored two books, Maximum Gifts by Return Mail (Fund Raising Institute) and The Complete Book of Model Fund Raising Letters (Prentice Hall). In 1970, Roland received the Direct Marketing Association Man of the Year Award. He finished his career at National Wildlife Federation at age 77.

Roland was a committed Christian, faithful father, avid golfer and swimmer, lover of opera and Scrabble. Throughout their married life, Roland and Althea shared a love for God’s Word. Just before he died Roland underlined the following Bible verse, “And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (Hebrews‬ ‭12:1-2)‬.‬ ‬‬

A Memorial Service is scheduled on November 23 at 2:00 pm at Moravian Manor, 300 W Lemon Street, Lititz, PA 17543 in Steinman Hall, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of Roland to Scripture Union, P.O. Box 215, Valley Forge, PA, 19481 (www.ScriptureUnion.org).
