Marilyn T. Rhoads

November 8, 1929 — January 16, 2017

Marilyn T. Rhoads, 87, of Manheim, died peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2017 at the Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Guy M. and Marion Dieter Tweed. Marilyn was the loving wife of Richard E. “Ernie” Rhoads and they observed their 63rd wedding anniversary in August of last year. Marilyn worked many years in the bookkeeping departments for Miller and Miller Accountants and Warner Lambert of Lititz. Following retirement she enjoyed working many years as a retail clerk for the former Watt & Shand Department Store at Park City. Marilyn was a member of the 1947 graduating class at Penn Manor High School; and was an excellent field hockey player for the school, and later played field hockey for a semi-pro field hockey team in Lancaster. Throughout her life Marilyn loved participating in all types of athletics from swimming, diving, to learning to play tennis in her later years and joining in tennis tournaments with her husband. She was a member of the Susquehanna Yacht Club and raced sail boats with her husband in her early years. Marilyn was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manheim, Manheim Tennis Club, Manheim Historical Society, and was an active and faithful member of the Manheim Women’s Club where she held many leadership positions. An exceptional seamstress, Marilyn loved to knit and sew; making her own clothes and clothes for her friends.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Ernie, are two sons: James Richard husband of Peggy Heine Rhoads of Rheems, Kenneth G. Rhoads of Manheim, a grandson, Gregory Rhoads, a brother, Ronald husband of Pat Tweed of Lititz, and a sister, Phyllis Hershey of Lancaster. Preceding her in death is a granddaughter, Kathryn Rhoads.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Marilyn’s memorial service at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 South Hazel Street, Manheim, on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Manheim Fairview Cemetery.
