John W. Worden, 83, of East Petersburg passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March, 2, 2011 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Ernest O. Worden and Edith Unger Dickinson. He was the husband of Mildred L. Haggerty Worden and they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in December. John retired as a truck driver at the former Interstate System, Lancaster after 38 years. He was an active member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, East Petersburg and he was a veteran of the United States Merchant Marine serving during WW II. John was also a member of the Merchant Marine Association, Retired Teamsters of Lancaster and he volunteered at the Susquehanna Association for the Blind for 14 years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed hunting and fishing in Forksville, PA, Sullivan County. He was known for his keen wit and sense of humor. Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, John S. husband of Brenda Worden of Landisville, two step sons, Barry R. husband of Polly Fair of Indiana, Marshall L. husband of Cathie Fair of Lancaster, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a brother, Richard C. Dickinson of New York and a sister, Midge wife of Joe Burns of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sally Hilmar and Betty Ann Hempfield. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, 6067 Carpenter Street, East Petersburg on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Donald Metz and Pastor Jerry Berrier officiating. Interment in East Petersburg Mennonite Cemetery. There will be a public viewing at the church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of service. Please omit flowers.
