George Smith Ober

George Smith Ober, 89, of Manheim, died peacefully at home on Monday, November 27, 2017. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late George M. and Mary (Smith) Ober. He was the husband of the late Bettie L. (Fair) Ober who died in 2010. George was a 1946 graduate of Milton Hershey Industrial School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a combat engineer from 1951 – 1953. He was an assembler at the former Fuller Company of Manheim for 36 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Blain Sportsmen’s Club, and a lifetime member of the Germania Band Club, and VFW Post #5956 both of Manheim, Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, and the Dela-Ches Fishing Association. George was an avid New York Yankees fan. His other interests included fishing, The Family Cabin, yardwork, NASCAR, Manheim Central Baron Football, and the Minnesota Vikings. He was best known for his homemade horseradish.

Surviving are two sons Glenn “Ed” Ober, Manheim, George “Randy” husband of Cynthia Fink Ober, Lancaster; two daughters Terry L. wife of John C. Rohrer, Manheim, Tracy K. Armentrout, Lititz; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, sisters Jane Herr, and Sarah Miller; brothers Jacob and Wayne Ober, and Bobby Fulkrod. Preceding him in death is a brother, Phares Ober, twins Ruth and John, and sisters, Catherine Weidman, Anna Mary Shelly, Leah Ebersole, Helen Oberholtzer, Betty Lentz and Blanche Minshell. George enjoyed spending time with his family and “Maggie-Mae” his best buddy.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend George’s public viewing and Gathering of Friends at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM with Military Service beginning at 4:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers contributions in George’s memory may be sent to Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, Inc. P.O. Box 8601, Lancaster PA 17604-8601.
