Hayes B. Girvin

March 31, 1936 — January 2, 2017

Hayes B. Girvin, 80, of Myerstown, and formerly of Lancaster, died peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Hershey Medical Center. Born in East Lampeter Township, he was the son of the late Harry and Verna Beyer Girvin. Hayes was the loving husband of Shirley A. Eachus Lightcap Girvin and they would have observed their 14th wedding anniversary in February of this year. His first wife was the late Barbara A. Houser Girvin who died in January of 2001. Hayes received a Bachelor of Science degree from Elizabethtown College and a Master’s Degree from Southern Illinois University. For over 23 years Hayes was a mathematics teacher for the Manheim Township School District, and was the Mathematics Department Chair. Hayes was a basketball coach for the boys and girls teams at Manheim Township, helped coach the track and field teams at the school, and was also a radio announcer for local sporting events. He spent his early years on the family farm, but was involved in athletics throughout his life. He was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd in Lebanon where he volunteered with the church for Heifer International to help end hunger and poverty. Hayes was currently serving as president of the Resident’s Committee at StoneRidge Retirement Community at Poplar Run, and was one of the founders of the flower gardens project. His interests included: hunting, fishing, bird watching, golf, reading, playing billiards, and gardening. Hayes loved spending time with his family and friends, especially in support of his grandchildren’s various sporting and musical events.

Surviving in addition to his wife Shirley, is a son, Lyndon R. husband of Cathleen Starr Girvin of Mountville, two daughters: Pamela K. wife of Steve Herman of Manheim, Stephanie L. wife of Michael Van Cisco of Lititz, eight grandchildren, one great grandson, two step daughters: Chris L. wife of Kurt Senger of Salemburg, N.C., Wendy J. wife of Cliff Jarrell of Kentucky, a stepson, Chuck D. husband of Beverly Lightcap of Denver, 6 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, a brother, Paul husband of Pamela Girvin of York, and two sisters, Fay wife of Larry Earhart of Annville, and Wanda wife of Donald Wazenegger of Sanford, N.C.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Hayes’ memorial service at the StoneRidge Poplar Run, Theater on Main, 440 East Lincoln Avenue, Myerstown (Please Use Main Street Entrance), on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Hayes’ memory to: Heifer International C/O United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd, 1500 Quentin Road, Lebanon, PA 17042.
