Everett Eugene "Gene" Bender

Everett Eugene Gene Bender, 77, of Mount Joy, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday December 26, 2009 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy.

He was the husband of Barbara Ann (Baum) Bender, and they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in March of 2009. Born in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Alva G. and Zelah (Bowers) Bender. Gene was a retired production planner at the former NCR of Mount Joy, and had also worked for Alcoa Mill Products of Lancaster. Gene proudly served his country as an AK2 in the U.S. Navy in the Korea War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea and with the Air Anti-Submarine Squadron Thirty during the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church of Mount Joy, Mount Joy Lions Club, Mount Joy Historical Society, and the Mount Joy American Legion Walter S. Ebersole Post # 185. In addition to his family he enjoyed antiquing, collecting coins, and model railroads.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters Bobbi wife of Howie Eby of Elizabethtown, Sue wife of Bob Kerlin of Maytown; two grandchildren Adam and Amy Kerlin; two brothers Gerald W. Bender of Maytown, Jon Scott husband of Marti Bender of Philadelphia; and a sister Mary L. wife of David Fretz of Mount Joy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Jamie Lynn Heiney, and a brother Russell Otis Bender.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his memorial service at the Heilig Funeral Home, 21 W. Main St. Mount Joy PA on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. David W. Pierce officiating. There will be a time of visitation with the family on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be private.
