Amos LeRoy Sands

November 26, 1923 — May 1, 2017

Amos LeRoy Sands, 93, of Elizabethtown, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday May 1, 2017 at Spring Creek Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Harrisburg, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Dolores (Fleck) Sands and they celebrated 21 years of marriage in December of 2016; he was also the husband of the late Ida Grace (Fellenbaum) Sands who died in 1994. Born in Ronks, he was the son of the late William A. and Emma (Brooks) Sands. Amos worked mainly as an award winning salesman, most notably for: C. W. Stewart (landscape design), North Atlantic Investors, New York Life, and Metropolitan Life. He was landscape gardener for Harry Hitchcock's Tulip and Azalea gardens in Lancaster. In retirement he started a mowing business. He loved to travel to visit family, for pleasure and wintering in Florida for over 30 years. He enjoyed playing banjo and mandolin, attending Bluegrass Festivals and volunteering for disaster relief. He also had a love for gardening and camping. He was a member of the Mount Joy Mennonite Church and previously at North End/Blossom Hill Mennonite Church. He taught Sunday School for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife Dolores are four sons, Harold husband of Debra (Adams) Sands, Willow Street, David husband of Stephanie (Farkas Farenwald) Sands, Lancaster, Mervin husband of Diane (Boomsma) Sands, Lancaster, Paul husband of Lorin (Trostle) Sands, Elizabethtown; two daughters, Carolyn Sands, Lititz, Janet wife of James Beamenderfer, Elizabethtown; one step-son, Ricky husband of Sherry Miller, Red Lion; two step-daughters, Doreen Hitz, Elizabethtown, Kristy wife of Jamie Clark, Elizabethtown; 12 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul husband of Helen (Ranck) Sands, Roaring Springs, William husband of Reba (Gibble) Sands, Mountville; and two sisters, Martha wife of Harold Miller, Millersville, and Rose wife of Irvin Good, Manheim. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Elma Stolzfus and two brothers, John and Richard Sands.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at the Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy, on Monday May 8, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Kraybill Mennonite Cemetery. There will be a public viewing on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Mount Joy Mennonite Church from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and also on Monday at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
