Talking about the realities of death with a child can be a challenge, even for child development professionals like Fred Rogers. Although you may want to protect your children, be open and honest with them. Here are a few tips from a booklet entitled "Talking With Young Children About Death" by Fred Rogers: Flower

  1. Even very young children should partake in some aspect of the funeral, perhaps even viewing the open casket.
  2. Children often take what adults say literally. It is important to clearly discuss and answer your child's questions and concerns.
  3. Some children may express their feelings indirectly through play or other physical outlets, so parents should support these activities and allow the child to mourn in their own way.
  4. Create a memory scrapbook, filled with notes and pictures of the beloved who died. This can keep the person's memory alive in the mind of both the adults and the child.
  5. The concept of heaven can be a difficult concept to understand for a young child. Children need practical and immediate answers, even though it is important to stay true to beliefs.
